Stores lean hard on psychology and marketing to convince you that you’re getting a great deal. But most “sales” are built to increase how much the store sells — not to save you money. Once you know the playbook, the bright yellow tags lose their power.

## The Illusion of a Discount: How Marketers “Paint” Prices

The most popular trick is called **anchor pricing** — an invented “was” price that makes the current price look like a steal.

Here’s a classic: a bag of coffee that normally sells for $8.99 shows up tagged “was $12.99,” now on sale for $8.79. Your brain registers a $4 saving. In reality, you’re saving 20 cents.

## The Top 5 Supermarket Tricks

**1\. The bright-tag effect (the placebo sale).** Yellow, red, and orange automatically read as “discount,” so stores slap loud tags on items that are sitting at their regular everyday price. It works especially well on products that are close to their sell-by date.

**2\. The “buy one, get one” trap.** “Buy two candy bars, get the third free” sounds great, but the per-unit price is often higher than standard — and you walk out having spent more than you planned.

**3\. Shrinkflation.** Manufacturers cut the package size but keep the price. A tub of ice cream quietly drops from 16 oz to 13 oz at a price that looks like a deal — but the cost per ounce hasn’t moved (or has gone up).

**4\. The magic of nines.** Prices are almost always $9.99, never $10. We read left to right, so that leading “9” registers as meaningfully cheaper than “10.” That small trick can lift sales 20–30%.

**5\. Complicated “deferred reward” deals.** Stores offer to put 30% back on a loyalty card instead of giving you a straight discount. The problems:

- Your money leaves your wallet now; the “reward” comes later.
- Points are a virtual promise designed to pull you back into _this_ store.
- Points often expire fast (sometimes in a week) and vanish if you don’t use them.

## How to Avoid the Trap and Actually Save

1. **Check the unit price.** Don’t compare packages — compare the cost per ounce, pound, or quart. It’s usually printed in small type on the shelf tag, and it’s the only honest number there.
2. **Know the real price before you go.** Use a price-comparison tool so you already know what things should cost — and can tell a genuine markdown from a repainted regular price.
3. **Shop with a list, and shop fed.** Hunger and bright tags are what drive impulse buys.

## The Bottom Line

The word “Sale” exists to stimulate the store’s sales — not to protect your money. Smart shoppers check real prices, compare, and bring the right tools before they buy.
